Reminder: Discount solar hot water

solar-panelReminder: Our solar hot water commercial offshoot, EcoTasmania, is still offering to Waterworks community members a 5 percent discount on solar hot water systems.

With the new $1600 Fed rebate (not means tested) + around $1000 of RECS + $500 HCC rate rebate most people can get a high quality system for less than $1000 (+ installation costs).

See earlier post for more information about our solar program.

Fire-proof your house

Living sustainably with fire

firefightingABC’s By Design program this week looked at some key points to consider when you are designing a house in a fire-prone area through the eyes or two architects specialising in these design concerns. Dr Ian Weir is putting forward the idea that we now need to live sustainaably with fire.

It starts by understanding how fire works, and all houses can be at risk from a structural fire. One of the key problems is stopping the embers and the fire that can trigger a structural fire inside the house.

You can click on the ABC site and listen to the program.

Veggie + herb seedlings

harvest-logo-microEnd of March is right time of year to plant out a range of vegetables and herb seedlings for growing over Winter.

I am sowing plenty of seeds for winter lettuce, broccoli, beetroot, spinach, leeks, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, parsley + other herbs. Punnets of these can be sold at Fair or even given away. We can’t have enough of these, so if anybody wants to help please do.

How about somebody doing some herbs?

Harvest Fair Update

harvest-logo-microWe had a fantastic meeting, Wednesday 18th, to coordinate many of the great ideas that locals have had to make this a wonderful sharing event.

We hope to make this an annual fair and the level of success will be determined by how much people help make this one great.

We are looking for people to be involved as much as possible. Many small roles need doing – including the following:

• Stall coordination for preserves, jumble / garage sale.
• Coordinator for exhibition arts stall (all age groups), with prizes.
• Raffle coordinator
• Workshop coordinator (Tas Aboriginal shell jewellery? Shingle Splitting? Wildfire prevention and defence? Circus skills?)
• Help with letterboxing
• Transport / parking manager

Please contact Amanda if you can donate/sale/exhibit re any of these stalls.

We have achieved so much already regarding Harvest Fair, including involvement with Tas Fires Service, Council, Harvest Seed company, various stalls, craft, garden, cake stall coordinators, first aid, bushcare.

For more information please see attached minutes (below) and please do come to any of weekly meetings / morning tea at Amanda’s @ 144 Waterworks Rd.
