A different way to compost.

We have recently bought a Bokashi bucket for our food waste in the kitchen.

We find this a really good invention. The bokashi bucket is a clean and non-smelly way of disposing of organic waste at home. The bokashi mix actually smells quite nice, almost like sour dough bread.

As the Bokashi microorganisms only ferment the organic waste it needs to either be buried in the ground for 2 weeks or so (before it can be dug out again and used as plant soil) or thrown onto a compost, where it can be broken down and fully degraded by the little helpers in the compost itself.

Although we have a small spot around our block of units, where we are allowed to bury our fermented waste, I think the community garden could benefit from some fertile soil, and we two are producing a lot of organic waste. Moreover, we constantly produce some liquid in the Bokashi bucket, which is a highly potent fertilizer (1 teespoon in 2-3 litres is enough as fertilizer!), and with our few herbs and aloe veras we don’t need that much fertilizer and you can’t store it for more than 24 hours, unfortunately.
