BMX bike track is a hit

“What a good job the council has done with the quarry,” said someone at this week’s community meeting, and there was all round agreement. It’s a splendid case of community – council collaboration that has taken some years to come to fruition.

Thanks to early intervention by local residents the quarry and surrounds have been kept as as recreation space, it’s got a great ambience being sheltered from wind and the rockface backdrop catches the sun nicely.

Now with bike pump track installed, not a day goes by without numbers of climbers and bike enthusiasts enjoying the space.

The pump track was partly installed to take pressure off bush fringe areas in South Hobart and Dynnyrne where dirt bikes have caused serious erosion. And this strategy seems to be working well, when I went down to take these photos I spoke to two keen young cycle enthusiasts and they were both stoked that the track has been made – both of them had previously been using bush tracks for their dirt bike recreation.

Local identity Jonah ‘the vegetable whisperer’ has taken up BMX riding with unabashed enthusiasm.

According to the plans there are picnic tables yet to come and a water tap is already installed. Not a bad spot for local gatherings, picnics, vegetable swaps etc.

With a huge amount of housing development taking place in this area there is an obvious need to maintain some quality green spaces, so full marks to local residents and Hobart Council for bringing this popular development to fruition.

I like it perhaps I will even beaable to have a go. It has taken almost as long as the road humps – but it is great to see the space being used for its potential rather than as a wasteland. We must congratulate the HCC on this local initative.

As a former resident of the Waterworks area, I fully support Chris’ and Bob’s comments – the site has improved dramatically since my family grew-up in that wonderful valley.
Keep up the good work – the HCC is to be congratulated – as are the residents!

I agree, the council have done a great job installing the pump track. My boys love it. It’s a shame they can’t ride there safely on the road though, that corner near Lilith’s is just an accident waiting to happen.
