Waterworks Valley Landcare Group is branching out onto private land – this coming Sunday. Everyone is invited.
173 Waterworks Road
Sunday, August 3rd
10:30 am to 12:30 pmTom & Michelle will be providing a BBQ for refreshment following the morning’s work.
As a start to helping local landowners come to grips with some of the weed problems on their own land, the group has obtained public liability and personal accident insurance.
This week-end marks the first of 2 sessions we are planning on private land for this year, with the hope that this can be extended to other properties throughout the valley in the years to come, with your help and involvement.
Firstly, we would like to build on the remarkable amount of weed management work done by Tom and Michelle in battling the enormous weed infestations on their land. We are focussing on the Boneseed, Broom and the small amount of Gorse on the hillside above the road (see map below).
With thousands of boneseed seedlings, there will be lots of fun for younger hands (prizes for the most seedlings picked). Older hands can tackle the larger boneseed plants, broom and gorse that will need to be cut using bushsaws or loppers, then paint stems with herbicide.
All volunteers will need to register and be briefed on safety and work requirements before starting work (insurance requirement).
Volunteers must wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing for the day. Bring some gloves if you have some (there will be some available if you don?t have any). There will be no motorised machinery (brushcutters, chainsaws etc.) being used on site and no fires during the working bee. Herbicide (roundup) application to cut stumps will be done by adults following briefing.
Any queries can be directed to Dave Graddon (62242969), or Tom & Michelle (62232332)

This is a really positive step, and I hope it works well enough to encourage other Landcare groups to give it a try. We’ll be there!
We’ll be there too.
