March 25th, 2009 — community organising, energy saving
Here in the Waterworks valley we have a community dedicated to sustainable living.
Having dealt with a range of practical issues, such as energy audits of housing, solar hot water, community gardens and so forth, it has become evident that we could do useful work to understand on barriers that prevent people from reducing their footprint (responding to climate change).
To do this we are applying for a Climate Connect grant through the state climate change office. (Approved in April 2009)

Good news. If you liked the Jan Gehl lecture you will like this one too!
Internationally acclaimed expert on sustainable cities, Peter Newman, will be giving a free public lecture and launching his new book, ‘Resilient Cities: Responding to Peak Oil and Climate Change’.
Australia’s leading voice on sustainable transport, Peter is best known for his work in reinvigorating Perth’s public transport system. He invented the term ‘automobile dependence’ and for 30 years has been warning about the need to prepare for peak oil. Peter’s other book, ‘Sustainability and Cities: Overcoming Automobile Dependence’, was launched in the White House in 1999.

November 18th, 2008 — energy saving, solar
Another Waterworks household has decided to install solar photovolatic system (guess who?).
Meanwhile, we all need to press for better feed-in tariffs (how much you get paid for surplus power), so that more people are attracted to go solar. And we have an opportunity to do just that.
The Tasmanian Government has issued a discussion paper (click HERE to download) on a proposal for a national feed-in tariff . This Monday (24th) is deadline for your feedback.
Meanwhile, the federal senate has just released its report (click HERE to download), generally favouring a unified national approach.
So please do take up the opportunity to have your say.

If we had the energy and commitment we could really do something in this valley. Click HERE and HERE to see information about the Green Precincts program.
The sort of plan that could be funded by this $500,000 program could entail complete solarisation of all the street households, a construction of a demonstration home / education centre for sustainable living and much more.
So… what do you think?

August 11th, 2008 — energy saving
Had a ring around places and compared square meter prices. All places said basically they need exact numbers in order to tell us about bulk discount. But all were willing to give some kind of discount and / or free delivery.

What does everybody think?
In order to get final figuers on discounts I will need final numbers. So please read the information below and let me know what type of insulation you need and how much and maybe how soon. Please differentiate wall and ceiling insulation and specify the R rating you want.
Any questions?? Just give me a call 6223 3332 or click HERE to email.

The Home Energy Audit workshop we conducted in June was well received. We decided to investigate a bulk purchase of insulation blanket – the best thing most homes can do is improve the thickness of insulation in their ceilings.

So…. here is some info about Insulation blanket from ringing around various suppliers.
