During the month of May the Tasmanian National Parks Association is offering some great bushwalks: “for the joy of celebrating and enjoying our wild places, and to help you get out there and nurture a love for our natural areas”.
These free guided walks offer a variety of places you may never have visited and they suit all levels of walking ability and experience. Everyone welcome to join in — you just need a little bit of fitness and a pair of walking boots.
You can download their walks list here.

Every year the Resource Work Coop (otherwise known as the Hobart Tip Shop) puts on a wonderful exhibition of artworks made from junk.
If you’re ever feeling arty, or just like to have a go at something new, why not exhibit a piece of your work?
The item at top left is a dog (named ‘canine control’), made by local resident Michael Harries and his friend Haki George for a previous Art-from-Trash exhibition. Other community members have also previously exhibited.
Art From Trash 2012, will be Saturday May 5 – May 20 at the Long Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre. (Deadline for new exhibits now closed.)
April 28th, 2012 — community organising, events
Quarterly gathering of Waterworks Community was on Wednesday (May 2) @ 164 WW Rd.

Discussion points:
• latest machinations in traffic calming saga,
• a new plan for the community garden,
• land developments, including vacant block,
• hatching community initiatives for the coming months
Last December meeting we brainstormed peoples’ wish list of ways to go forward and a jumble of those loose ideas is on the following list. Would be good to agree on one or two practical initiatives.

April 7th, 2012 — events, food + gardens

The first of our workshops on how to preserve food was held on Dec 4 – and this is what we learned.
Basically you can supply yourself with a year’s worth of bottled tomato for all sorts of recipes like pasta and bakes, at a much cheaper cost than using Fowler’s jars – or buying tins from supermarkets all year.
For Jonah’s method…. continue reading.

Shifting Gears – Making Transition Happen!
– a weekend workshop for those interested in growing sustainable communities.
This website is now nearly 4 years old and the community group a bit more than that. Over that short history we can be proud of a significant number of achievements: we spearheaded solar bulk purchases, have run energy saving education campaigns, run two wildly successful harvest fairs, undertook a major behaviour change educational project, we’ve campaigned for traffic calming, have run a walking bus all that time and, for our efforts, have won two environmental awards.

The ever popular Sustainable Living Expo is on again in November.

This year the show will feature a novel set of Q&A style discussions to explore opportunities and challenges for creating sustainable lifestyles and livelihoods in our Island State.
• What will Tasmania look like in 25 years?
• Our economy, community, and land use?
• How will we move around?
• How will we power our cities?
• What will we eat?
What question would you like to see put to the line up of prominant Tasmanians as they explore these questions and more? You can submit your question HERE.
July 7th, 2011 — Climate Connect Project, energy saving, events
Waterworks Valley Community has just won the 2011 Award for Environmental Excellence (community category).
The award was presented in recognition of the work that we have undertaken during the past two years with our Climate Connect Project – overcoming barriers to behavioural change.
Our project team comprised Jacqui Allan, Jonah Gouldthorpe, Amanda Sully, Stuart Godfrey, Chris Harries and our partner organisation Eco Tasmania Inc (a spin-off from our successful bulk purchase of solar hot water systems). Glenda Hosking played a key role in managing the project’s finances.

May 5th, 2011 — events
World Environment Day is this Sunday, June 5.
Take this opportunity to celebrate the planet that we live on.
Most importantly: join us at the “Say YES climate rally” at 11 am – this is a very critical moment as Australia finally moves towards putting a price on carbon.
After the rally, then you can take the family to enjoy the Tread Lightly Festival (see below), lots of information talks, good food, a nice family outing with a good purpose.
See you on Sunday!
