How to grow native plants in your area

Native plants can be part of a well managed, fire resistant garden.

Here is a new service (based in Neika) dedicated to helping householders who wish to develop fire-safe native gardens using plants developed from the local gene pool.

Proprietor Paulette will produce high quality tubestock or grow advanced plants on request, after collecting seeds from the immediate locality.

Get to know the local birds

superb-fairy-wrenWaterworks Valley Landcare Group is holding a Bird Walk on Sunday, 6th December.

To be led by local resident Don Knowler (he writes the popular ‘On the Wing’ column each week in the Mercury)

Meet 10am at main gates of Waterworks picnic reserve. Bring a drink and binoculars if you have them.

Great display of orchids this year

Last Sunday an orchid walk was organised by the Waterworks Valley Landcare Group and the Council. Unfortunately not many people attended, probably because of the clash with the climate friendly home visits. However, if you want to see some beautiful orchids like those in the pictures below, head southwards across the road and up the hill from the Waterworks Reserve gates.

pulling-boneseed This was the site of Waterworks Valley Landcare Group’s boneseed eradication in early August – on the hillside above 127 to 131 Waterworks Rd.

The Landcare group has taken the initiative this year of helping home owners get rid of weed infestations on bushland on their properties. This was a great effort from all who took part, not least the children.

This cockatoo has rythm!

Sulphur crested cockatoos may drive us mad with their incessant squawking and rampaging of fruit trees, but these smart birds have real character.

Road kill update

Road kill numbers were very low throughout the winter but have started to pick up again. So please drive slowly from dusk to dawn during the summer months.

Where animals have died

Note: These numbers are based on roadkills that have been noticed by community members and passed on, so they represent a conservative estimate. To help improve accuracy, please keep sending emails about any dead animals you see to Sebastian or post comments on this website.

Please contact Sebastian if you would like a copy of Google Earth file with details of where and when the accidents are occurring.

Landcare gathering

Thanks heaps to all those that came last Sunday to help with the landcare work at Michelle and Tom's. A lovely morning.

If you want to connect with landcare activities in the valley, then please do come to the Waterworks Valley Landcare AGM this coming Monday (August 11).

8pm, at Dave Graddon’s house at 152 Waterworks Road. Everyone is welcome.

The group is particularly seeking a volunteer to act as convenor for the next 12 months – or 2 people acting as co-convenors. This is a very useful and not-too-hard role to fill, the main activity being to liaise with Hobart Council’s Bushcare Co-ordinator (Sonya Stalbaum) over bushcare activities in the valley.

Please email Sue Lockhart if you may be interested.

By the way, the orchid images are from this excellent Tasmanian orchid website
