Ceiling insulation: what to buy?

The Home Energy Audit workshop we conducted in June was well received. We decided to investigate a bulk purchase of insulation blanket – the best thing most homes can do is improve the thickness of insulation in their ceilings.

So…. here is some info about Insulation blanket from ringing around various suppliers.

Rockwool: This is sold as a special purposes material usually for sound-proofing and insulation combined. There isn’t a 100mm product.

Mark Nnegri 62 722 237 will sell 75mm thick rockwool 4 metre roll 750mm wide (equiv to 4.8 sqr metres) cost $145 (after $10 discount).

Glasswool: Paul at Bradford Insullation 6234 3481 recommended not to use rockwool but glasswool (he said it is safe to use – Asthma Foundation OK it – and all insulation should be installed wearing dust mask and gloves).

Glasswool blanket: 1.2metres wide by 10 metre roll (R2.5) costs $135
Glasswool batts: to cover 8.5 sqr metres (R3.5) $50

He said you can just lay batts closely packed over the top of existing batts. They shouldn’t be moving around up there anyway (if they do there’s drafts which need fixing before insulation).

So… for cost and insulation qualities it looks like the ordinary glass fibre batts are the way to go.

Aurora insulation
Aurora Energy offers an ‘pink batt’ insulation deal also. Click HERE to see the details, including prices of bulk amounts.

Polyester insulation is an environmental alternative. This is made from recycled materials and is non-irritant, but more expensive. For retail prices of their batts and blankets click HERE. They are open to bulk prices.

WE plan an extension for which we would need roof insulation. So we are interested to bulk buy. Because of allergy plus asthma in our family we might be interested in the polyester type. But I want to find out more first. Any one else thinking of Polyester?

I will need a house lot of wall and ceiling insulation soonish. I would prefer polyester/wool blend (30/70%). This product is avalible in Hobart from Thermowool Ph 62723189

We can do with 25 square metres of ceiling blanket plus 12 square metres of ceiling batts.

How about we compile list of interested people by end of July?

We want some extra insulation (ceiling blanket) for our roof space but haven’t worked out how much yet – roughly 150m2.

Bradfords have R4.1, 215mm thick glass fibre batts (made of recycled galss) on special until Friday next at $36 per pack – covers 5 sqr metres. (normally $55). Ring them to order.

I think this is really good value and am going to buy enough to add to my roof.

We are definitely interested, probably in the wool mix blanket type, probably R3+ Need to measure for exact quantities, at a guess 150sqm.
