The first harvest

On one of those magical Summer days, February 13, the community garden saw its first harvest – whilst one group picked the beans, another crew shelled them (over a little wine and Jonah’s excellent dips) and a good time was had by all.

Spuds will be next and the beds are now being prepared for autumn / winter crops of beetroot, wom bok, kale and a variety of other crops.

For anyone interested, next Saturday (20th Feb) will do more bean harvesting and planting of seeds and seedlings. For the record we have 30 garden beds, each of them allocated to a person or family to manage.

Thanks to Dave Graddon for the photos.

From lawn to lunch

unknown-1Food. What we eat and where we get it from is perhaps more important than solar power… or how you get around.

For an insight, read this story: 8 Ways to Join the Local Food Movement.

And this one too.

And this third one tells about the power of the commercial food industry.

(The food basket, pictured, was exhibited at our Harvest Fair)

Thank you Amanda

Thank you, thank you to all those who helped make the Fair a success.

Your jams / pickles / fruits

harvest-logo-microThe Harvest Fair will be displaying / selling preserves that have been made by residents of our valley.

So if you have any jams, pickles, bottled fruit etc that you would like the opportunity to share, please email me so that I can co-ordinate a ‘fruitful’ display. You are welcome to sell any excess you may have or to simply help us showcase the fruits of our labour.

Wanted – your craftworks!

harvest-logo-microAs part of the Harvest Fair (see story below), we would like to have a display of arts and crafts that have been created/made by residents of our valley.

So if you have a quilt, cross stitch, tapestry, scrapbook work etc, etc that you would like the opportunity to share, please email me so that I know what to expect on the day and so I can contact you with further details.

Cheers, Sharron (at 140)

Attention all cake (slice/ biscuit) makers

harvest-logo-microWe’re having a cake stall at the fair. So….. could you please let me know if you can make a cake, cakes, slice or biscuits by e-mailing me, or feedback on website (below).

All offerings will need to be labelled with the type of cake, list of ingredients and maker’s christian name. (Health Department does not allow fresh cream to be in cakes sold.) All profits from stall will go towards reimbursing our costs from the fair (bus hire/ paper for printing etc)

Happy gardeners

zucchini-2Zucchini growers, show us your wares. Apply the fertilizer now, fend off competitors, keep the slugs at bay…. for there is to be a giant zucchini competition at the fair.

Town councillor and community member Philip Cocker will be there with his scales and measuring tape.

(Photo is a modest example, but rest easy – Chris is not growing zucchini this year.)
