On one of those magical Summer days, February 13, the community garden saw its first harvest – whilst one group picked the beans, another crew shelled them (over a little wine and Jonah’s excellent dips) and a good time was had by all.

<img src="http://waterworksvalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Harvest-3.gif" alt="" title="Harvest-3" width="420" height="279" class="align center" size-full wp-image-1345" />Spuds will be next and the beds are now being prepared for autumn / winter crops of beetroot, wom bok, kale and a variety of other crops.

For anyone interested, next Saturday (20th Feb) will do more bean harvesting and planting of seeds and seedlings. For the record we have 30 garden beds, each of them allocated to a person or family to manage.

Thanks to Dave Graddon for the photos.

Amanda Sully (sully.amanda@gmail.com)

Please come if you are able to put in some real time and energy as we need your help!!!

It was such a lovely day last year and at least 50 fab locals helped pull it off with $1,200 raised that has set up the brilliant “Waterworks Community Garden”. Such structures as fences and a watering system was installed through the fair profits which is great and a special thanks to the generous Graddons!

We need people to suggest and coordinate all/any sorts of local produce, garden seedlings and crafts stalls, provide entertainment, resources, time and any ideas.

Please contact me if you are able to help, or I will see you at morning tea next Wednesday 24th at 10am!!

Lets prepare for harvest time!

Special thanks to Amanda Sully and friends who dealt with all the logistics. And to everyone else who contributed in all of your various roles. It could have been chaos. Hope you all had a great day.

Dear All,

Thank you so much for being a part of the Waterworks Harvest Fair. Everyone seemed to have a lovely time and all the stalls were just beautiful!! The entertainment was BRILLIANT thanks to wonderful Morris and Circle Dancers, the lovely choir, baskers and Steptoe & Co (not Son!!!).

It was especially moving to have Auntie Coral an Aboriginal Elder, give a Welcome to Country and bring her stunning shell jewelry – thanks to Coral, Rodney and Sharron.

The Children’s actvities were just fabulous thanks to Jacquie, Matt and the face painters!! All the drinks were delicious and necessary on such a lovely warm day.

All those gems cooking all w/e was a real boon to raising $$$!!

I counted last night and we raised approximately $1,450 in net profit (plus $370 for the Waterworks Bushcare group from the tofu sizzle) with the Fair costing $450 in total. The cakes made $$312.65, Muffins & Cookies $119.55, preserves made $256, raffle $172 and fresh produce and stall commissions $409 and Jonah’s stall $176.

A big thank you to lovely Margaret and all those hardworking people from Sustainable Living Tasmania for helping us make this fair possible.

I am off to the South West Clean Up Beaches trip with Surfrider Foundation on Wednesday for 8 days but hope to have a catch up after that regarding options for a Waterworks Community Garden!!! very exciting.

You are all wonderful people and we feel blessed to live in such a magnificent valley! In particular thanks to Chris and Glenda – it was fun to do the fair. Having long service leave over Summer helped.

Let’s show Tasmania what we can do with reaching our carbon neutral target by 2025!

For our Future Together

To Celebrate Opportunities of a Simpler Life

WATERWORKS HARVEST FAIR SUNDAY 29TH 2-5PM
To Celebrate Opportunities of a Simpler Life

<img src="http://waterworksvalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/harvest-logo-micro.jpg" alt="harvest-logo-micro" title="harvest-logo-micro" width="142" height="82" class="align left" size-full wp-image-267" />Fresh produce and preserves, kids’ games, sustainability initiatives, sausage/ tofu sizzle, and fire engine all part of inaugural Harvest Fair

Hundreds of people are expected to attend Sunday’s Waterworks Harvest Fair to enjoy fresh locally-grown produce and preserves, sustainable community initiatives, and fun activities for kids.

Waterworks Community is building positive initiatives to help protect the environment by attempting to map out a practical living-guide to a better future. The Harvest Fair is about showing the joy of a simpler life in the local community.

Harvest Fair organizer Amanda Sully said “We wish to help ourselves and others move forward from the paralysis of fear about the future towards a vision to rebalance our lives for the better.”

“There will be over 20 stalls exhibiting or selling fresh garden produce, crafts, jumble sale, seeds, bush care, sausage/ tofu sizzle, preserves, home-made lemonade and a giant zucchini competition. Workshops will be held on solar-energy bulk-buying options, weaving, spinning, vege gardening, composting, wood splitting and bird watching. There is also a large focus on kids’ entertainment with busking, face-painting, races, guessing games and apple-bobbing.”

Ms Sully said “The Waterworks community has started on the challenging road towards becoming carbon neutral with such projects as solar hot-water bulk orders, a gardening club, community fire preparation, energy audits of houses, bush-care initiatives and a school walking-bus.”

“We hope not only to become carbon neutral but actually to become carbon positive like a similar community in Frieburg, Germany which is actually a net creator of energy.”

“We invite people from all walks of life to walk or bike ride to our lovely, fun-filled, family fair up in the Waterworks Reserve Sites this Sunday afternoon.

“Drivers are requested to park outside the reserve and either walk the rest of the way or take the courtesy bus which will be doing 15-minute circuits of nearby streets in South Hobart and Dynnyrne.

“We encourage people to host fairs in their own communities. Believe me, it is a great pleasure to have helped organize the inaugural Waterworks Harvest Fair!” concluded Ms Sully.

WHAT:	Waterworks Harvest Fair (selling fresh locally-grown produce and displaying community initiatives)

WHEN:	2-5 pm, Sunday 29 March

WHERE:	Sites 6,7 and 8; Waterworks Reserve, Dynnyrne
