Waterworks community has been well represented (myself, Dorka and Horst, Glenda and Phil, Chris, Steff and Vica) in working bees at Princes Street Primary School vegetable garden.
Rebecca Boyle plus and other parents have been keen to introduce a culture of environmental awareness in the school and have started a small vegetable garden, worm farm and composting heap near the kindergarten and child care centre – and more recently some beds for fruit trees and vines.
Fruit trees have now been planted out, most being sponsored by families involved with the school. Waterworks community has sponsored a tree (using the Waterworks community funds- $25). This ‘golden harvey’ tree produces small apples with an orange/ red blush, yellow flesh, rich aromatic flavour and has a tendency to bear heavily.
The trees are going to be espaliered and will be growing along the fence line by the walkway to the kindergarten. The garden looks great, well worth a look if you’re passing.
On National Tree Planting day, many keen school children helped plant out native plants (supplied by Hobart Council) along the oval fence lines. An Environment Club has started at school with various projects in the pipe line – energy audits, energy saving campaigns, food scrap collections (class room & canteen), further tree plantings, larger vegetable gardens, more fruit tree plantings, water tank installations, recycling and waste minimisation. This is another Rebecca Boyle initiative: this indomitable woman deserves a gold medal for all her work instigating ideas and encouraging the school community.

If you can, please come to grand working bee at Princes St School – it’s on Monday 15th Sept.
We’ll be doing landscaping and making new garden beds. Many hands make light work.
