Sharing transport resources?

One thought I had on resources - I need my ute - but not often. I have thought about share owning it.  Would have to have levels of trust and rules of management, but thats easy to work through. Any thoughts?

It’s a good idea, Ian. Carol and I have been trying to provoke some discussion on collective ownership or sharing of transport resources.

Most people only need a micro car to get around – the main reason they own larger cars is for the odd times when they want to carry more than usual.

Best formula is to own smallest practical vehicle (average occupancy of cars is only about 1.7) whilst having larger vehicle share-owned.

We learned a lot from PNG villages, which generally have one vehicle (normally a ute) managed by one person but which the whole village uses for general transport - bulging at the seams!

sounds good Ian. We need our van for the big family and also have a little car for part-family trips. To use a ute sometimes would be great. Let’s discuss things further.

I would be interested in this idea too Ian, depending on the cost and management arrangements. My neighbours and myself had talked about the idea of a shared trailer but not having to have a large vehicle for towing would be a bonus.

thanks for input, seems that a valley vichicle is possible if shared by about 10 households - not what I want to organise or participate in. I wold need a 50:50 share with a single person/house.

Anyone interested?

Interesting how many people like the thought of shared transport (maybe because we feel guilty?) but when it comes to the wire it’s not so easy to actually organise anything.

Highlights how rigidly independence and individualism are imbedded in modern society. Cars are the ultimate expression of these values.

I find this interesting from the perspective of barriers to sustainable living. Sharing of resources is the hardest one of all for us (Westerners) to overcome.

Just a reminder in case some people aren’t aware - Cary has offered the occasional use of his ute to anyone who needs it for short trips, like taking stuff to the tip.
