Next community gathering is at Trish and Stu’s.
Tuesday 29th
7.30 pm.
131 Waterworks Rd.
So far this year we have been sidetracked by the traffic calming issue. It’s time to get onto other sustainability projects.
We can letterbox the whole Waterworks Community, inviting them to join our activities.
We also have the opportunity to conduct an invaluable research project – on barriers that people find inhibit them from becoming more sustainable.
But these are just two ideas. If you have things you would like us to discuss, just go immediately below this and click where it says comments.
Any feedback, good ideas, good references……..etc are much appreciated.

My interest is in our use of water, eg Michael Mobbs using it at least 3 times before we dispose of it and I am also interested in collecting run off for potential usage in micro hydro schemes especially seeing as we live on the side of a hill and most of the energy is lost in the stormwater being disposed of in the Sandy Bay rivulet. We have a potential access to a few potential resources and I do think there is potential for demonstration exercises at the local level. I can imagine something will come thru’ soon from Federal, State or Hydro. So I want to see if we can position ourselves to be in on the ground floor. I would also like to put to ideas to Helen Burnet, Phil Cocker and Bill Harvey.
Of course I would like to get it into some presentable form so that an appropriate investigation can be undertaken.
I agree with Chris’s comments. Besides inviting involvement we also need to try to understand difficulties to regigging.
I have always found attitudes take time to address, especially where mine and other peoples values really have to be drastically adjusted. That is what faces us all, doesn’t it???
Another problem is seeing the obvious. I could go on especially with building design & amp; energy refits or conservation. But I simply recommend a German book called “Detail” on Energy-Effiency Upgrades that demonstrates just how far behind we are in Australia in really confronting the issue of adjusting while maintaining a particular standard of living.
Resistance or impediments are built into our systems and also our thinking. Adjusting to a new world view is truly pretty dramatic, don’t you think? For 60 years we have had our love affair with fossil fuel exploitation.
Adjustment infers we actually might be rather stupid, selfish, greedy or religiously spiritual in our behaviour.
So the way we go about changing and the the options for adjusting really have to be exploratory, demonstrable, able to be tested, open minded and for some people simply made desirable?
i’d like to recruit a few more walking bus participants and discuss bike tasmania- a cycling advocacy group. any people interested in cycling might like some info.
If you look to the right hand side of this web page you will see some useful websites. These include Cycling South’s newsletter/website – and this includes a calendar of bicycle activities and outings in Southern Tasmania.
If people have other web resources they think would be good to include here (in line with sustainable living) then please recommend.
Would like to look into possibilities to strengthen the community spirit…eg. start playing volleyball at the quarry or meeting with the children on e.g. a friday after school for kicking balls, throwing freesby, cricket, batmenton, tennis…just bring what you want and have fun together.
Improve communication.
Still struggle with the website myself. Could there be a section about who got what resources, tools and if they are willing borowing? Could there be a option to communicate directly with any registred member via the website by using a password to access email, phone number, housenumber… of registered members and at the same time make sure privacy is kept safe.
cheers dorka
I like the idea of getting actities at the Quarry. It reminds me that we had some consultation with Council over 2 years ago and some of just want some prettu simple improvements that would provide a viable surface for play and stop balls going out onto Waterworks Rd. I think we should see what we can set up and at the same time ask for some very basic surfaces and fencing.
Apparently the Landcare Group including Dave Gratten and Robert Rands, met with Julie Stoneman (HCC) on Wed the 30 April 2008 to look at the quarry site and discuss possibilities.
Robert Rands has offered to follow up the previous public consultation (over some 2 years ago) that would be on Council files. It seems like it might be time to ensure the right hand knows what the left hand is doing. I was just a bit surprised as this was my first knowledge that there was further movement on the project. This is pretty important as a recreational spaces for teenagers and some of us oldies to have fun.
